At the Heart of the Alma Theatre is Schoolhouse Productions
Created in 2016 by Holly Newton, the Alma’s industrious Theatre Manager, and Anna Friend, the imaginative and creative Artistic Director of Swindon’s Quirky Bird Theatre, after numerous cups of tea and long discussions about what it was we wanted to see more of in the South-West theatre scene. We knew that the Alma’s Theatre loyal following deserved an in-house theatre company who were dedicated to producing top-quality shows every season.
And so a theatre company was born!
We love to bring well-loved texts – daringly updated, and always reimagined – to an unsuspecting audience.
Our aim is to breathe new life into classic texts; from the age-old to the modern masterpiece, and to share these stories with as many people as possible.
Our aim is also to make a company that is organic and ever-growing. With every production we bring new, wonderfully talented people on board to enrole in, and be enveloped by our way of working and the quality of productions we make. They become a part of the company and part of the family.
While the Alma Tavern is our mater, our loving base where we create, showcase and are lucky enough to have a loyal following, we take our home-grown productions on the road, and are always looking to develop relationships with audiences (and their venues) around the UK.
Our productions to date are; Jim Cartwright’s Two, Simon Stephen’s 2014 version of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Mike Leigh’s Abigail’s Party.
The plans are made – the stage is set, and the show will always go on.
